Urban Wren picks new executive chef, Eggs Up expanding again: Weekly Dish

When chef Taylor Montgomery announced his departure from Urban Wren, there remained a question of who would take his place.

Look no further for the answer. On Aug. 8, chef Marcus Beato was announced as the restaurant’s culinary lead. Beato previously served as chef de cuisine for The Bellwether on South Main Street and has cooked up and down the East Coast.

Urban Wren has seen changes in its leadership recently but remained true to its founding vision, which is to present local ingredients in a creative and esoteric way. The restaurant is also planning pop-ups with up-and-coming local chefs.

The restaurant, located at 116 N. Markley St. in downtown Greenville’s West End, is open Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m.

Local restaurateur Conley McIntyre has signed up to open six more Eggs Up Grill locations. McIntyre most recently opened Eggs Up in Mauldin in the former Gretchen’s ABS Cakes, Cafe and Supplies space back in June.

One of the six will open in Travelers Rest, while the remaining five will open in the Charlotte area. The franchise is South Carolina-born with locations all over the state; there are locations in downtown Greenville, the Nicholtown and Five Forks areas, Mauldin, and more.

Whataburgers galore! The Texas-based fast-food chain opened its third location in South Carolina Aug. 12 at 308 W. Butler Road, bringing its white-and-orange wings to the city of Mauldin.

The news comes weeks after the Woodruff Road location opened July 29 and one month after the first South Carolina location opened in Boiling Springs July 10.

Whataburger CEO Ed Nelson is an Upstate native.

In case you missed it:

  • A longstanding Greenville dinner theater announced its intent to close in 2025 via social media. Cafe and Then Some will close out its current show, “White Trash Lotus,” as well as a Christmas show and best-of show before its final curtain call. Cafe and Then Some is located at 101 College St.
  • Monkey Wrench Smokehouse in Travelers Rest has closed, but it will be replaced in the location by SBH BBQ, which began on Pelham Road in Greenville. Barbecue is there to stay at 21 S. Main St., just under a different name.
  • A new coffee shop will hit Greenville’s Main Street come September. Led by Matthew Langlands and his family, Tselia Coffee will function as a craft-coffee shop with house-roasted beans. It will be located at 219 N. Main St. between The Comedy Zone and Maren + Main.
