Proterra Expands In South Carolina Creating 200 New Jobs In The Upstate

Proterra Inc. has announced plans to open a new manufacturing plant in South Carolina, as demand for commercial electric cars continues to rise in the United States and around the world.

Proterra is a leader in the design and manufacturing of zero-emission electric transit vehicles and electric vehicle (EV) technology solutions for commercial applications, and its new $76 million plant in Greer, South Carolina, is slated to bring 200 new jobs to the Upstate.

Greenville has been home to Proterra’s East Coast electric bus production facility since 2010. With its new Greer plant, Proterra is now expanding its manufacturing presence in the Upstate region to include EV battery system manufacturing.

The new plant, which is located in Greer’s Carolina Commerce Center, will manufacture battery systems for its clients’ electric vehicles, including delivery and work trucks, industrial equipment, buses, and more, according to the company. The plant will also bring battery production closer to Proterra Powered customers and the company’s own Proterra Transit electric bus manufacturing units.

By 2025, the factory is expected to accommodate increased battery system production as well as ancillary systems for electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks and equipment.

Proterra’s new plant is expected to be operational in the second half of 2022.
