Project Hope Foundation celebrates three Hope Academy graduates

Three high school students graduated from Project Hope Foundation’s Hope Academy on Aug. 16.

Christopher Thompson, Eli Leathers and Asher McMullen each received a high school certificate through the South Carolina Independent School Association. The event marked the Hope Academy’s third high school graduation in its 27-year history.

Hope Academy provides year-round education to kindergarten through high school students with autism. The school is accredited by SCISA and is operated by local nonprofit Project Hope Foundation.

“We created a curriculum that meets SCISA’s standards for graduation, while also incorporating coursework individualized to our students’ needs,” said Susan Sachs, co-founder and co-executive director of Project Hope Foundation.

Spartanburg Police Chief Alonzo Thompson said it was a proud day for his son, Christopher.

There’s a lot of obstacles and hurdles life throws things your way such as autism in our family’s case. But today, he reached the threshold,” Thompson said. “He’s transitioned basically from childhood to young adulthood.”
