Prisma Health, UnitedHealthcare reach new in-network insurance agreement

Prisma Health and UnitedHealthcare announced they have reached a new multi-year agreement on July 19.

Effective immediately, people enrolled in United Commercial and Medicare Advantage health insurance plans can receive in-network services at Prisma hospitals, physician practices and other health care services. The agreement is retroactive to June 1, according to Prisma Health.

The new network agreement comes months after the parties’ previous contract expired on Jan. 1 due to failed healthcare reimbursement negotiations. As a result, thousands of patients with United Healthcare insurance became out-of-network at Prisma facilities.

Prisma Health President and CEO Mark O’Halla said in a statement that he is pleased UnitedHealthcare agreed to equitable reimbursement that reflects the increased costs Prisma incurs from providing patients with medical care.

“These terms will allow us to prioritize patients’ needs and provide our physicians and hospitals with the resources required to deliver high-quality health care to United health plan members,” O’Halla said.

Prisma is currently contacting affected patients to inform them of the new agreement. More information can be found online at prismahealth.org/patients-and-guests/billing-and-insurance/accepted-health-insurance.

“We thank our members and customers for their support and patience throughout this process. We are honored to continue supporting all of the people throughout South Carolina who depend on us for access to quality and affordable health care,” according to a statement by UnitedHealthcare.
