Longtime tenant and airport district mainstay Runway Café has posted a petition to remain in place along the Greenville Downtown Airport runway.
The restaurant opened in 2010 and will have been in business 15 years when its lease ends in May 2025. The business posted the petition Sept. 8 to give its customer base a voice.
“(The petition) wasn’t even our idea,” said owner Lem Winesett. “That was our customers. They said, “‘Y’all need to put a petition out here. We want to be heard as well.’”
As of Sept. 12, the petition had roughly 600 signatures.
Initially, Winesett was hesitant to post the petition. He wanted to avoid rocking the boat and does not want to leave a sour taste in anyone’s mouth but said the public’s response has been heartwarming.
The deadline for the bid at 21 Airport Extension is Sept. 30.
“We definitely plan on handing [the petition] in with our proposal,” Winesett said. We want to show the Airport commission the support we have from the community. It is truly wonderful how they always get behind us on whatever we do.”
Runway Cafe was featured on an episode of “Restaurant: Impossible” in 2022. The cafe is located at 21 Airport Road Extension. Those interested in signing the petition can sign in person or reach out to the team at its website, runwaycafegmu.com.
