New proposed Greenville County school boundaries affect 900 students

Greenville County Schools plans to change student assignment boundaries to accommodate the new Reedy Laurel Elementary School.

The district’s recommended plan includes 24 school boundary changes at the elementary, middle and high levels. The proposed changes are expected to affect approximately 900 students, 600 of whom will be assigned to Reedy Laurel Elementary. 

School boundaries are the geographic area that determines which school a student is assigned to in the district.

Tim Waller, director of media relations for GCS, said attendance areas are reviewed on an as-needed basis. This can include situations where a new school is developed like Reedy Laurel Elementary or an existing school building is expanded.

Reedy Laurel Elementary at 61 Isbell Lane is being built to accommodate the district’s growing student population. According to the district’s recommendation, students from Mauldin Elementary, Pelham Road Elementary and Sara Collins Elementary will be reassigned to Reedy Laurel Elementary.

When the school opens in August 2025, it will be initially populated by students in grades K5 through 2nd. The district plans to add one additional grade per academic year with all six grade levels, K5 through 5th, fully populated by 2028-29. 

Students at Reedy Laurel Elementary will feed into Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle, Beck International Academy, J.L. Mann High Academy and Southside High, according to the recommended assignment plan. 

GCS also proposed changing other school assignment boundaries to eliminate 18 “attendance islands” – areas not connected to a school’s main attendance area. According to the district, the changes also address factors such as building capacity and transportation distance between student’s homes and schools.

Some school boundary changes currently include zero GCS students, according to the district. GCS Special Education Department will continue to make individual assignments for students with disabilities.

Outreach and input

Families of the students affected by the school boundary changes will be notified directly by the district. Parents or guardians who have questions can email [email protected] by Sept. 24. 

GCS will also host public meetings on the assignment changes on:

• Sept. 16, 5:30 p.m. at Mauldin High Auditorium. Focus: Oakview Elementary, Woodland Elementary, Mauldin Elementary (to Oakview), Mitchell Road Elementary
• Sept. 18, 5:30 p.m. at Roper Mountain Science Center. Focus: Augusta Circle Elementary, Bethel Elementary, Blythe Academy, East North Street Academy, Greenbrier Elementary, Mauldin Elementary (to Blythe Academy & Reedy Laurel Elementary), Pelham Road Elementary, Reedy Laurel Elementary, Sara Collins Elementary, and Summit Drive Elementary
• Sept. 19, 5:30 p.m. at MT Anderson Support Center. Focus: Grove Elementary, Sue Cleveland Elementary, Thomas E. Kerns Elementary, Greenville Middle Academy, Hughes Academy, League Academy, Sevier Middle, Carolina High Academy, Greenville Sr. High Academy, Eastside High, Wade Hampton High, Woodmont High

GCS administration will use the public input to create a final plan that will be submitted to the Committee of the Whole on Oct. 8. If recommended, the district’s Board of Trustees is expected to review the plan on Oct. 22.
