Hispanic culture, arts on display at Charleston event

Art lovers and those interested in learning more about Hispanic culture can head to the historic Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston in August for an event that will showcase the works of modern Hispanic artists.

Allied4Art is a partnership between the Hispanic Alliance, the South Carolina Arts Commission and Palmetto Luna Arts to explore the arts’ potential to create space for dialogue, knowledge and understanding.

“In everything that we do, we’re interweaving the vibrancy of Hispanic culture into our work,” said Andrew Skinner, director of public relations and development for the Hispanic Alliance. “As we work for an equitable and inclusive society in South Carolina, we can’t forget about the importance of Hispanic culture in the day-to-day life of everyone in South Carolina.”

The exhibit will expose original Hispanic artwork to a broader audience while examining the challenges of Hispanic artists and proposing systemic solutions for their advancement from a statewide lens. Additionally, the alliance plans to release an arts assessment that it recently conducted in partnership with the South Carolina Arts Commission and Palmetto Luna Arts.

The exhibit is part of an ongoing effort from the Hispanic Alliance to spark dialogue surrounding cultural inclusion. As Skinner said, “Art is a universal language with the capacity to invite people from all backgrounds to come together in a common voice.”

Allied4Art is an extension of the work of the Hispanic Alliance, which works to foster collaboration and connectivity among people, resources and cultures to build thriving communities. In 2024, the Hispanic Alliance and its partners are convening people from diverse industries, backgrounds and cultures to shine a light on the opportunities to engage the growing Hispanic population in building prosperous communities across South Carolina.
