Here’s a recap of Greenville County Council’s Aug. 20 meeting:
Initiated: Gowensville zoning process
Council unanimously approved initiating the zoning process for more than 2,000 acres of land representing more than 200 property owners in the rural Gowensville community in northeastern Greenville County.
The effort began more than 18 months ago through the grassroots efforts of Preserve Gowensville, a group of area residents seeking zoning protections to preserve the rural character of the area.
The group has taken advantage of county council’s creation of an agricultural preservation district zoning category in late 2021, and most of the 188 contiguous properties petitioning for initial zoning are seeking that designation.
An additional 38 scattered, non-contiguous properties in the Gowensville area will be included in this process.
Next steps include:
- A zoning public hearing Sept. 16 at County Square, 301 University Ridge
- First reading of zoning ordinance at Sept. 17 County Council meeting
- Evaluation of ordinance at Sept. 25 Planning Commission meeting
- Evaluation of ordinance at Oct. 24 meeting of council’s Planning and Development Committee
Depending on the outcome of the Planning Commission and Planning and Development Committee meetings, second reading of the ordinance is expected in November.
