Deciding where to eat in downtown Greenville just got a whole lot harder now that Gather GVL has opened its open-air style urban dining place
Driving down Augusta Street, it’s hard to miss Gather GVL with its flamboyant shipping containers repurposed into a robust al-fresco food hall. Gather GVL opened in mid-February with a communal gathering space, and businesses offering food and drink from repurposed shipping containers all modified to fit the needs of each vendor. There are long common tables, comfortable plush seats, fire pit, and splashes of primary colors in red, green and yellow. Gather GVL positioned the shipping containers around a central courtyard with a curated offering of vendors.
“Creating a community gathering place is really at the center of our vision,” shared Doug Cross, co-owner of Gather GVL. You cannot find a lot of places where friends and families can engage in a casual, exciting atmosphere in which local restaurateurs and brewers hone their craft and people get to enjoy them.
When asked why they opted to use repurposed shipping containers for this project, Doug says, “This is really my son’s vision. When we started our development company about three years ago. He said we need to do something a little more unique than just traditional real estate development. He started doing his research and he discovered a project in Long Beach, CA called SteelCraft. He went out there and check it out and came back and said Dad, that is the coolest thing I have ever seen, we’ve got to do that in Greenville.”
Gather’s overall vision of creating a communal space over the craft of food does come with its share of challenges. They fell a year and a half behind schedule due to uncontrollable factors and construction works below and above ground. Nevertheless, the long wait has ended and they see their goals coming into fruition, including finding the right partners fit for their project.
Gather GVL is a place where family, friends, and even pets can hang out together in addition to enjoying culturally inspired dishes. There’s something for everyone here, you can bring your whole team at lunch and everyone will be able to get what they like instead of trying to fight over a restaurant.
Gather GVL offers a unique blend of traditional and fusion cuisine from tacos to steak, donuts to pastas. Their list of tenants includes Mercado Cantina, Sweet Sippin’ Wine Bar, Mike’s Cheesesteaks & Roast Pork, Greenville Beer Exchange, Cocobowlz Acai Shop, KO Burger, HenDough Chicken & Donuts, West End Coffee Bar, Rocky Moo Ice Cream, Prost! German Style Food & Drink, Saki Saki Sushi & Hibachi, The Pasta Addict, Al Taglio Pizzeria.
The food
We zoomed in on three specials places to see what they have to offer.
HenDough: Do not miss out HenDough’s donuts, HenDough is a fried chicken and doughnut shop modeled after the one they have in Hendersonville. The highlight is their yeast donuts but they also feature similar menu to the original location.
Mercado Cantina: This place offers modern Mexican street food inspired by the Yucatan region. You can find posole, tacos, tostadas, mole, agua chile, and cochinita piviil. They also have a full bar with an inspired cocktail menu with a focus on mezcal and tequila along with margaritas, mojitos, micheladas and hibiscus and vodka.
Mike’s Philly Cheesesteaks and Roast Pork: This shop features Philly cheesesteaks done the traditional way. Their menu features the classic roast pork hero sandwich, as well as the Philly steak sandwich, fries, and not steak sandwiches.
For drinks, Simpsonville-based wine bar opened its Greenville location in Gather GVL, Sweet Sippin’ feature wines by the glass and bottle. For beer lovers, there’s Greenville Beer Exchange, also opening its second location featuring craft beer on tap.

In light of the recent COVID-19 situation, Gather GVL is temporarily shut down as a public gathering place. Nevertheless, they are still open to serve great food and deliver great service to everyone. They have an app where you can order online and pick-up.
