Hot Tomato Summer — brought by the Greenville-born Duke’s Mayonnaise – is back again for the fourth time around. The event is a 10-day celebration of tomatoes and the legendary condiment along with local restaurants.
The challenge is to create and submit a recipe that uses Duke’s Mayo and tomatoes for a chance to win the Golden Tomato Award. Last year, the overall winner was Charleston hideaway The Royal American. Greenville’s winner was downtown favorite Urban Wren.
“The mayonnaise is still produced just up the road in Mauldin, so there’s a home field advantage-type of excitement from restaurants and patrons alike in Greenville,” Sarah DiPeppe, Duke’s digital content manager, said. “We can’t wait to see what chefs whip up this year and who secures the Golden Tomato Award. Their creativity in making Duke’s and tomatoes shine on a plate — or in a cocktail — never ceases to amaze us.”
This year, the event has expanded, adding Raleigh, North Carolina, and Knoxville, Tennessee, to the list that already included Greenville, Charleston, Charlotte and Richmond, Virginia.
The event takes place July 18-28 but registration for restaurants is now open. Interested eateries can apply to join the competition at dukesmayo.com/pages/htsreg. Registration ends June 28.
