Defenders for Children, a local nonprofit that works to prevent child abuse, trafficking and pornography, donated an electronic detection K9, a golden retriever named Scooby, to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
Scooby, who was named by naming sponsor International Plastics, will replace Queue, a labrador retriever who is retiring as an electronic detection K9. Queue was donated to GCSO by Defenders of Children almost six years ago. During her time in service, she has participated in the delivery of 83 search warrants and has found 110 electronic devices. She will remain with GSCO as a therapy dog.
“Both electronic detection K9s represent more than just advancements in investigation techniques,” said Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis. “They embody the evolving frontier in our efforts to combat crime and ensure public safety. With a specialized training, Scooby will play a pivotal role in detecting electronic devices crucial to investigating a wide range of cybercrimes.”
Since 2018, Defenders for Children has donated 14 dogs to law enforcement agencies in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Illinois. Three more dogs are set to graduate from electric detection training in November, but when and where the K9s will be placed has not been announced.
