Upstate artists and volunteers painted “Black Lives Matter” in massive colorful letters in downtown Spartanburg, SC. The mural, designed by 16 artists and volunteers, was laid out on West Broad Street between Church and Spring streets, facing the Spartanburg City Hall and Police Department.
Unlike murals in other major cities across the country, this one is colorful, each letter an individual design and story creating a powerful Black Lives Matter street mural.
The project was the result of a collaboration between city leaders, artists, and the community. Hours were spent on Saturday creating the mural and it was unveiled on Sunday via the City of Spartanburg’s social media.
Public opinion on race and criminal justice issues has been steadily moving left since the death of George Floyd. Over the last few weeks, support for the Black Lives Matter movement has increased prompting nationwide protests. Organizers of the mural and those in attendance are hoping this visual representation of the movement will help inspire change and peace.
