According to a new study by United Van Lines about the moving trends of Americans, South Carolina has been ranked No. 3 on a list of top moving destinations in 2021.
The moving company issued its 45th Annual National Movers Study on Monday, which tracks state-to-state migration patterns using customer data.
According to the study, employment contributed to 19.18% of inbound moves to South Carolina, and retirement was the top reason for moving to the Palmetto State (36.56%), followed by family (28.85%), and lifestyle (23.66%).
United Van Lines also performed a survey to look into the motivations and factors for people moving across state lines. According to the survey, 31.8 % relocated to be closer to family, while 32.5 % relocated for a new job or job transfer.
The following were the top 10 inbound states of 2021:

- South Dakota
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
- Florida
- Alabama
- Tennessee
- Oregon
- Idaho
- Rhode Island
Greenville, according to Eily Cummings, a spokesperson for United Van Lines, ultimately reached no. 24 on the list of top 25 metro areas.
