The Spartanburg City Council announced at its Monday night council meeting that a Piggly Wiggly grocery store is coming to the south side.
The store will be located at 550 S. Church St., on the former Save A Lot site, according to council members. A grocery store hasn’t been open in the area in over a year and a half.
Save A Lot was the only grocery store serving the south side of Spartanburg, South Carolina. For many residents without personal vehicles, grocery shopping is a challenge. Some residents have had to rely on public transportation since the store closed, making buying a few groceries difficult and time-consuming.
When the store closed in 2019, city officials began exploring for alternatives, and earlier this year, the city council approved $600,000 in funding for a grocery store to be established on South Church St.
Councilwoman Ruth Littlejohn of District 3, where the grocery will be located, said, “We are truly grateful for this grocery store coming to this side of town.” “We’ve been in a food desert here for two years. A lot of residents have had to travel for miles just to buy a few bags of groceries.
According to Timothy Parrott, manager of business development with C&S Wholesale Grocers, and Randy Burton, head of Community Grocers, LLC, the store should be ready to open by January 2022.
