Slater-Marietta community leaders have come up with a plan to bring the healthy food closer to its residents.
The Slater-Marietta Community Association will open a local farmer vendor market this May at Jimi Turner Park, on Baker Circle in Marietta.
Gina Hinton of the Slater-Marietta Community Association (SCMA) said that Slater-Marietta is a food desert and access to a variety of healthy and affordable food is limited.
“One of our objectives to our mission is providing resources to healthy food and with our local grocery store closing down a few years back, we have a need for healthy food options here and especially from our local farms and vendors,” Hinton said.
The local vendor market is made possible through the help of SMCA members, local churches, and local organizations such as Foothills Family Resources, Slater-Marietta Youth association, Live Well Greenville, Project Host, Greenville County Rec, County Councilman Joe Dill, and local farmers.
The market will open every Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
