On Saturday, July 30, the Spartanburg Police Department will hold a gun buyback program at Spartanburg City Hall, located at 145 West Broad Street, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The event will be a drive-through at Spartanburg City Hall’s lower level. Officers will exchange any functional handgun, rifle, or long gun for a $100 Visa gift card, and any functional high-powered gun for a $150 Visa gift card. A range master will be onsite to make sure the guns are operational.
The buyback program is a response to rising gun thefts, according to Police Chief Alonzo Thompson. Thompson said Spartanburg has received reports of 63 incidences involving a total of 71 stolen guns this year. 36 stolen were from cars that were left unlocked, while 5 were stolen from vehicles with reported damage.
“We just want the guns,” Thompson said. “This can be a life-saving event.” All guns turned in will be destroyed, he said.
The event, according to officials, is open to everyone in Spartanburg County, not just residents of the city.
